Some of you may know my story. For those of you who don’t, to put it succinctly, a great part of our preparedness journey as a family started because of the Ferguson Riots. We lived them. But now violence is erupting again in Minneapolis and many other cities across the country.
During the Ferguson riots, if we walked out of our front door, we could smell the teargas. Hearing gunshots – that was a regular occurrence. A crowd in our front yard? Check. Police helicopters overhead? Check! Bugging out once because of danger to our family and another time because of planned protests? Check and Check again!
Guys, it was not fun. It was scary “as all get out.” My littlest guy who was 3 at the time stopped sleeping in his own bed. My older kids wouldn’t leave the house. This was real.
If you are living near the location of the riots, what should you be doing now?
For those of you who live near the location of the Minneapolis riots or any of the other locations of civil unrest across the country, my heart breaks for you. I’ve lived it first-hand. The riots burned down my Wal-Mart, Sams, Little Caesars, Walgreens, and Shop and Save. Most of these were less than a mile from my house. Some were less than 1/4 mile.
I am not here to comment on what started the riots. I have rock solid beliefs, but like most of the discussion of COVID right now, it will only produce fighting. Let’s talk about something productive that we can all be on the same page with.
1.) Pack your bug out bag.
If you live anywhere near the riots, you should have your bug out bag ready. Don’t know what a Bug Out Bag is? It’s a bag that you put things together so that you’re ready to leave at a moment’s notice. During the Ferguson Riots, before we knew about bug out bags, we kept packed suitcases in our vehicle so that if we couldn’t get home, we had the necessary items to go somewhere else. Be ready. Keeping your BOB in your car is an extra added plus.
Another thought that will help you get out quickly if you need to is that you need to back your car into your driveway or garage. This will allow you to pull out of your garage or driveway as quickly as possible.
2.) Know where you are going to go.
Are you going to a friend’s house who lives outside Minneapolis or Atlanta or Portland or Columbus or any of the other locations of civil unrest? Do you have a relative that lives in a neighboring state, and could you go there? Are you going to stay in a hotel? Plan that out NOW. Not only that but get permission from the people you hope to stay with NOW. That way there are no surprises when you show up by yourself or even with your kids in tow.
3.) Decide what event during the riots will trigger your departure.
There should be something that happens so you know when to leave – some type of trigger. Do you plan to leave when the violence gets one mile from your house? Do you plan to leave when there is a planned protest near your house? As a family, do you know it’s time to go when you hear of violence on a specific street that you know can spread quickly?
Have this talk with your spouse or significant other NOW! You may THINK that you’re on the same page. You probably aren’t. I know from experience! The more settled the two of you can be on this NOW, the better off you’re going to be when it comes time to leave. This article will give you a lot more to think about in regards to WHEN you plan to leave.
4.) Use Twitter.
Twitter? Yes!! Use Twitter. People will take pictures of what’s going on and post it to Twitter – probably with the #MinneapolisRiots or #[insertyourcitynamehere] riots. Twitter was a better tool than the police scanner was for us when we lived through the Ferguson Riots.
We had people being pulled from cars at an intersection near our house. We had to know what was the safest way to get out of town. Twitter gave us a really good picture of what was going on, where it was going on, and how to avoid the troubled area.
Do a search for #minneapolisriots and you’ll see exactly where the action is and what the safest route out of town is.
5.) Please, please understand that “Normalcy Bias” can get you killed.
Resist it!! What is normalcy bias? It is believing that everything will be the same as it always has been. How do you fight against Normalcy Bias? This article has a whole section on what it is, how it can affect you, and how to combat it.
6.) Help prepare your kids for what’s going on.
Parents if you find yourself living through these riots, it doesn’t matter whether your kids are 15 or 3, you can talk with them in an age-appropriate way about what is going on. Help them feel as safe as you can. Tell them that you’re going to leave if you feel that their safety is threatened – and then do it as soon as you need to. Help them pack their bug out bags. Make sure that you include a “Lovie” for your younger children. It will absolutely help them feel safer!
Learn to notice the differences in your children between how they used to act and how they are acting now and do what you can to help mitigate what they are going through. If you can’t actually stop what they are going through, then do what you can to help them have a sense of normalcy in the midst of it. For us, routines helped. It was also helpful to learn where we could go that was safe so that our children could get their energy out. Extra time talking with parents or extra snuggle time with those children who need it is also vital.
7.) Take a video of you walking through your house and record EVERYTHING in it.
If, heaven forbid, you leave your home because of the riots and come back to a charred house, you’ll need that video for insurance purposes. You may think that you’re going to remember what brand of china your grandmother gave you so that you can replace it. You won’t. Which brand of printer did you have? Yeah, you won’t remember that either. You’ll forget about half of the clothes in your closet. And I bet you don’t remember which brand of TV or Blueray player that you have either. Walk through your house with your phone and take a video of everything, making sure that you catch their brands.
8.) Realize that you’re going to mourn. It’s normal, and it’s okay.
Once the riots had turned more violent, I completely lost my sense of security even in my own home. That might sound like a “DUH,” moment, but until something like this happens, it’s hard to realize just how deep your sense of security had been and just how much is now gone. It was that ‘normalcy bias’ that I talked about earlier. It was then that I realized things weren’t going to get better quickly.
With our sense of security gone, practical things changed for us. we could no longer sit out on our porch swing. Our children weren’t allowed outside. The blinds were kept pulled all day long. We didn’t leave the house unless we absolutely had to. At night we could literally smell the tear gas that was being hurled at people.
And you are going to MOURN over all this in your heart! It’s okay to mourn it! It’s okay to feel it, but don’t let that feeling paralyze you!
9.) Unfortunately, this is probably going to continue for a long time.
Most people don’t realize that the Ferguson Riots went on for more than a YEAR after they started. I have friends who still live in the area. They were telling me that there was still violence in the area up to the TWO YEAR anniversary of Michael Brown’s death.
But time continued on. Despite the fact that there was still unrest almost every night, television stations stopped broadcasting about the riots. Everyone was tired of hearing about them, so all of a sudden, in the media, it was like the riots didn’t exist. But they did for us.
These riots were what eventually moved us out of the area to where we live now. And while living in Central Illinois has its own set of challenges that is likely to move us on again, it was better than our children living in the midst of constant violence.
10.) Take time to get your car ready now.
Having items that you keep in your car all the time is VERY helpful in case you ever need to leave quickly. We keep various tools, foods, drinks, first aid kits, and more in our family vehicle. You never know when having them in your car is the difference between you having something and you having nothing. I have a whole series on how to prepare your vehicle.
Like it or not we’re rapidly moving into the world of 5G radiation, or 5th generation cellular telecommunications.
Why?
Because the frequency bandwidths used currently by cell phones and similar technologies are becoming saturated.
And also because we live in a world where people want more. 5G, and the Internet of Things (IoT) that goes with it, promises to give us more.
But more what?
Super-Fast Download Speeds
5G and IoT promises to connect us in our homes, schools, workplaces, cities, parks and open spaces to over a trillion objects around the world. It promises cars that drive themselves, washing machines that order their own washing powder and softener plus of course super fast downloads and streaming.
According to Fortune.com 5G will support at least 100 billion devices and will be 10 to 100 times faster than current 4G technology.(4G was already about 10 times faster than 3G).
It’ll bring download speed up to 10 Gigabits per second. This would let us have an entire building of people send each other data in close to no time, thus improving productivity.
What is 5G?
5G offers mind-blowing data capabilities, practically unrestricted call volumes and near infinite data broadcast. It does this by 5G using largely untapped bandwidth of the millimeter wave (MMW), which is between 30GHz and 300GHz, as well as some lower and mid-range frequencies.
This table compares the different generations of mobile technologies:
There are some other features of 5G you need to be aware of:
Wireless Cell Antennas Galore
Millimeter waves (MMWs) do not travel well through buildings and they tend to be absorbed by rain and plants. This interferes with the signal. Added to this, high frequency waves like MMWs also have much shorter wavelengths that can’t travel far.
To counter this problem 5G will utilize smaller cell stations (and the technology of beamforming) that’ll scramble/unscramble and redirect packets of data on a no-interference path back to us. This could mean wireless antennas on every lamp post, utility pole, home and business throughout entire neighborhoods, towns and cities.
This short video gives a succinct explanation of what you can expect:
5G MIMO Miniature Cell Towers
Current 4G cell towers have about a dozen or so antenna ports to support all communication, the new, smaller 5G cell towers (or bases) will be MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and carry about a hundred ports. These towers will probably be about 4 feet tall as opposed to the usual 90 feet towers currently erected around us. Cells will be available within a 100 meter range and these smart antennas will be able to differentiate between various mixed-up signals – like radio waves and WiFi signals – in the air and beam them back in an orderly fashion so to speak.
5G will break down data and send it in smaller sizes to offer significantly reduced transmission times. Data will be sent with only a 1 millisecond delay instead of a 50 millisecond delay commonly found with 4G. With communication this fast, it’ll allow machines to talk to each other with practically no room for error. As Marcus Weldon the CTO of Alcatel Lucent comments, “up until now, we’ve designed the networks for people and their needs, and now we’re designing it for things.”
Given what we already know about the links between serious diseases, including cancer, and cell tower radiation from the existing cellular network, there is cause for concern.
The Dangers Of 5G Radiation – 11 Reasons To Be Concerned
The USA is currently leading the way on 5G. At the June 2016 press conference where the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) head Tom Wheeler announced the opening up of low, mid and high spectrum’s. There was no mention of health effects whatsoever. But the dangers are real.
Thousands of studies link low-level wireless radio frequency radiation exposures to a long list of adverse biological effects, including:
Let’s not also forget that in 2011 the World Health Organization (WHO) classified radio frequency radiation as a possible 2B carcinogen.
More recently the $25 million National Toxicology Program concluded that radio frequency radiation of the type currently used by cell phones can cause cancer.
But where does 5G fit into all this? Given that 5G is set to utilize frequencies above and below existing frequency bands 5G sits in the middle of all this. But the tendency (it varies from country to country) is for 5G to utilize the higher frequency bands. Which brings it’s own particular concerns. Here is my review of the studies done to date – 11 reasons to be concerned about 5G radiation.
#1 – A Denser Soup of Electrosmog
We’re going to be bombarded by really high frequencies at low, short-range intensities creating a yet more complicated denser soup of electrosmog – as this diagram shows.
To work with the higher range MMW in 5G, the antennas required are smaller. Some experts are talking about as small as 3mm by 3mm. The low intensity is for efficiency and to deal with signal disruption from natural and man-made obstacles.
#2 – Effects on the Skin
The biggest concern is how these new wavelengths will affect the skin. The human body has between two million to four million sweat ducts. Dr. Ben-Ishai of Hebrew University, Israel explains that our sweat ducts act like “an array of helical antennas when exposed to these wavelengths,” meaning that we become more conductive. A recent New York study which experimented with 60GHz waves stated that “the analyses of penetration depth show that more than 90% of the transmitted power is absorbed in the epidermis and dermis layer.”
The effects of MMWs as studied by Dr. Yael Stein of Hebrew University is said to also cause humans physical pain as our nociceptors flare up in recognition of the wave as a damaging stimuli. So we’re looking at possibilities of many skin diseases and cancer as well as physical pain to our skin.
#3 – Effects on the Eyes
A 1994 study found that low level millimeter microwave radiation produced lens opacity in rats, which is linked to the production of cataracts.
An experiment conducted by the Medical Research Institute of Kanazawa Medical University found that 60GHz “millimeter-wave antennas can cause thermal injuries of varying types of levels. The thermal effects induced by millimeterwaves can apparently penetrate below the surface of the eye.”
A 2003 Chinese study has also found damage to the lens epithelial cells of rabbits after 8 hours of exposure to microwave radiation and a 2009 study conducted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Pakistan conclude that EMFs emitted by a mobile phone cause derangement of chicken embryo retinal differentiation.
#4 – Effects On The Heart
A 1992 Russian study found that frequencies in the range 53-78GHz (that which 5G proposes to use) impacted the heart rate variability (an indicator of stress) in rats. Another Russian study on frogs who’s skin was exposed to MMWs found heart rate changes (arrhythmias).
#5 – Immune System Effects
A 2002 Russian study examined the effects of 42HGz microwave radiation exposure on the blood of healthy mice. It was concluded that “the whole-body exposure of healthy mice to low-intensity EHF EMR has a profound effect on the indices of nonspecific immunity”. (To read a more extensive article on the link between EMFs and the Coronavirus click here.)
#6 – Effects on Cell Growth Rates
A 2016 Armenian study observed MMWs at low intensity, mirroring the future environment brought about by 5G. Their study conducted on E-coli and other bacteria stated that the waves had depressed their growth as well as “changing properties and activity” of the cells. The concern is that it would do the same to human cells.
#7 – Effects on Bacteria Resistance
The very same Armenian study also suggested that MMWs effects are mainly on water, cell plasma membrane and genome too. They had found that MMW’s interaction with bacteria altered their sensitivity to “different biologically active chemicals, including antibiotics.” More specifically, the combination of MMW and antibiotics showed that it may be leading to antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
This groundbreaking finding could have a magnum effect on the health of human beings as the bandwidth is rolled out nationwide. The concern is that we develop a lower resistance to bacteria as our cells become more vulnerable – and we become more vulnerable.
#8 – Effects on Plant Health
One of the features of 5G is that the MMW is particularly susceptible to being absorbed by plants and rain. Humans and animals alike consume plants as a food source. The effects MMW has on plants could leave us with food that’s not safe to consume.
Think GMOs on steroids. The water that falls from the sky onto these plants will also be irradiated. A 2010 study on aspen seedlings showed that the exposure to radio frequencies led to the leaves showing necrosis symptoms.
Another Armenian study found that MMWs of low intensity “invoke(s) peroxidase isoenzyme spectrum changes of wheat shoots.” Peroxidase is a stress protein existing in plants. Indications are that 5G will be particularly harmful to plants – perhaps more so than to humans.
#9 – Effects on the Atmosphere and Depletion of Fossil Fuels
Implementation of the 5G global wireless network requires the launching of rockets to deploy satellites to emit 5G radiation. These satellites have a short lifespan which would require a lot more deployment than what we’re currently seeing. A new type of hydrocarbon rocket engine expected to power a fleet of suborbital rockets would emit black carbon which “could cause potentially significant changes in the global atmospheric circulation and distributions of ozone and temperature” according to a 2010 Californian study. Solid state rocket exhaust contains chlorine which also destroys the ozone.
The effects on the ozone are thought to be worse than current day CFC exposure.
Google’s Project Loon is said to bring Internet to rural and hard-to-access areas by using helium balloons. But these balloons only have a 10-month lifespan. We’re looking at a lot of helium being used here, more than what we can possibly have on Earth?
#10 – Disruption of the Natural Ecosystem
Since the year 2000, there have been reports of birds abandoning their nests as well as health issues like “plumage deterioration, locomotion problems, reduced survivorship and death,” says researcher Alfonso Balmori. Bird species that are affected by these low levels, non-ionizing microwave radiation are the House Sparrows, Rock Doves, White Storks, Collared Doves and Magpies, among others.
But it’s not just the birds. The declining bee population is also said to be linked to this non-ionizing EMF radiation. It reduces the egg-laying abilities of the queen leading to a decline in colony strength.
A study conducted by Chennai’s Loyola College in 2012 concluded that out of 919 research studies carried out on birds, plants, bees and other animals and humans, 593 of them showed impacts from RF-EMF radiations. 5G will be adding to the effects of this electrosmog.
#11 – Most 5G Radiation Studies Mis-Leading
5G will use pulsed millimeter waves to carry information. But as Dr. Joel Moskowitz points out, most 5G studies are misleading because they do not pulse the waves. This is important because research on microwaves already tells us how pulsed waves have more profound biological effects on our body compared to non-pulsed waves. Previous studies, for instance, show how pulse rates of the frequencies led to gene toxicity and DNA strand breaks.
5G Radiation Already Used In Crowd Control
It might sound difficult to believe but the 5G frequencies which will soon be blanketing our neighborhoods have been under development for a number of years by defense agencies, including the U.S., Russian and Chinese, as a means of crowd control. The US army uses Millimeter waves in crowd dispersal guns called Active Denial Systems. Dr. Ben-Ishai explains, “if you are unlucky enough to be standing there when it hits you, you will feel like your body is on fire.”
I have also published an extensive article which answers the question — is 5G dangerous?
5G Live Testing Already Begun
AT&T have announced the availability of their 5G Evolution in Austin, Texas. 5G Evolution allows Samsung S8 and S8 + users access to faster speeds. This is part of AT&T’s plan to lay the 5G foundation while the standards are being finalized. AT&T has eyes on 19 other metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco and so on. With Indianapolis to follow.
Charter, the second-largest cable operator in the US, has been approved for an experimental 28 GHz license in Los Angeles. The outdoor tests will use fixed transmitters with a 1 km or smaller effective radius.
Qualcomm has already demonstrated a 5G antenna system with about 27 decibel gain. According to ABI Research, is “about 10 to 12 more db than a typical cellular base station antenna.” Not a good sign.
Many more private sector companies such as HTC, Oracle, Sprint, T-Mobile are playing a role in the developing of testing platforms by contributing time, knowledge or money.
In the UK the 3.4GHz band has been earmarked for 5G use with contracts awarded to O2, Vodaphone, EE and Three. While the 2.3GHz band, awarded to O2, is likely to be used for 5G too in time.
Residents of Geneva in Switzerland, reported feeling “bad from one day to the next”, following the installation of 5G antennas in the city. Common symptoms reported were insomnia, tinnitus, headaches.
5G Call to Action
Research and pre-testing is rampant by companies who are interested to tap into the lucrative waters of 5G. But few are willing to research its effects on health. The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines remain essentially unchanged since 1998, not allowing for the recognition of radio frequency microwave radiation and MMWs as harmful unless there is a heating effect. But a few experts are speaking out.
DariuszLeszczynski from the University of Helsinki and also former member of the International Agency Research on Cancer is one of them. He has brought to attention to ICNIRP intention to classify skin as limbs. Limbs are paid lesser attention to when classifying exposure levels. Research indicates that MMWs affect the skin and the eyes the most. If skin is classified as a limb, this will pave the way for industry giants to introduce even higher exposures and put more people at risk.
The Global Union Against Radiation Deployment from Space (GUARD) addressed a letter to the FCC in September of 2016, bringing to their attention the harm 5G will inflict. GUARD warned the FCC that 5G violates Article 3 of The UN Declaration of Human Rights which states that “everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.” The document is laden with research, information and global support.

What Experts are Saying About 5G
Here’s what experts are saying about 5G radiation:
“There is an urgent need to evaluate 5G health effects now before millions are exposed…. We need to know if 5G increases the risk of skin diseases such as melanoma or other skin cancers” -Ron Melnick, the National Institute of Health scientist, retired
“Along with the 5G there is another thing coming – Internet of Things. If you look at it combined the radiation level is going to increase tremendously and yet the industry is very excited about it…. they project 5G/IoT business to be a $7 trillion business.” -Prof. Girish Kumar, Professor at Electrical Engineering Department at IIT Bombay
“The new 5G wireless technology involves millimeter waves (extremely high frequencies) producing photons of much greater energy than even 4G and WiFi. Allowing this technology to be used without proving its safety is reckless in the extreme, as the millimeter waves are known to have a profound effect on all parts of the human body.” -Prof. Trevor Marshall, Director Autoimmunity Research Foundation, California
“The plans to beam highly penetrative 5G milliwave radiation at us from space must surely be one of the greatest follies ever conceived of by mankind. There will be nowhere safe to live.” -Olga Sheean former WHO employee and author of ‘No Safe Place’
“It would irradiate everyone, including the most vulnerable to harm from radiofrequency radiation: pregnant women, unborn children, young children, teenagers, men of reproductive age, the elderly, the disabled, and the chronically ill.” —Ronald Powell, PhD, Letter to FCC on 5G expansion
How To Protect Yourself From 5G Radiation
My 3 step approach for dealing with, not just 5G radiation, but EMFs generally can be summarized as:
Understand your exposures. Understand the different types of EMFs and how they behave – hence the need to read (and share) articles like this one.
Measure – use an EMF meter to obtain readings and identify hotspots.
Mitigate your exposure. Which means either eliminate the source, move further away from the source of radiation or shield your body.
I recommend the same approach with 5G radiation. There is a concern that current EMF meters are not able to measure the frequencies of MMWs. On this point, researcher and electrical engineer Alasdair Philips from Powerwatch states “current RF meters cover the frequency ranges proposed for most 5G use in the next three years”.
Endless Possibilities For The Future
5G may bring about a new form of industrial revolution, human connectivity and even a new reality. It offers endless possibilities for the future.
We do need more research. But already what is clear, as the research I’ve shared here indicates, is that there are real dangers.
Which is why it even more important to take action to protect yourself and your loved ones. Please share this article with your friends and family.

We’re living in an era where the demand for innovative technology is at an all-time high, which is why 5G coming to cities is welcomed by many people, companies, and governmental entities. Deployments will be implemented through installing new cell towers, and adding beacons on existing infrastructure like street lights and utility poles. For most cities where trials are or will be conducted, companies overseeing these operations like AT&T don’t have exact numbers on the amount of infrastructural installments needed to distribute 5G connectivity. Due to their powerful but short wavelengths, cell towers need to be in much closer proximity to each other.
Despite 5G’s unparalleled quality in streaming, downloading, and reception, there are some people with growing (even hostile) reservations. The influx of cell towers is causing concern regarding some of the negative and potentially harmful effects 5G could bring about that range from health and environmental issues, to their effects on a community’s real estate market. Below are three major worries communities have with rising cell towers aimed at deploying widespread 5G connectivity.
1. Health
5G uses microwave technology, so their towers—in some cases—can emit the same level of radiation as a microwave in someone’s home. Studies show cell tower radiation could cause genuine health problems, and it’s been determined effects on humans and the environment from 5G have barely been studied. Some researchers believe it could be years before the true health consequences of microwave radiation emerge since we have just one generation living in a cradle-to-grave lifespan of exposure to this level of manmade radio frequencies.
According to a study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), 5G cell tower microwave radiation exposure has been linked to an array of symptoms from head, heart, and muscle issues; sleep complications like insomnia and fatigue; and breathing difficulties, to high-pitched ringing in ears, memory impairment, dizziness, and erratic mood swings. This is in addition to previous studies linking microwave radiation exposure to illnesses like cancer, heart disease, neurological dysfunction, even immune system suppression and cataracts.
2. Environment
Researchers are testing 5G on millimeter waves, which vegetation and rain are susceptible to absorbing. As water falls from the sky, scientists fear plants can be contaminated with radiation and ultimately become inedible. In 2010, a study on aspen seedlings determined exposure to radio frequencies caused leaves to exhibit necrosis symptoms, while Armenian-based trials revealed low-intensity millimeter waves invoke peroxidase (a stress protein in plants) isoenzyme spectrum changes of wheat shoots.
Since 2000, there have been documented instances of radiation sources (like cell towers) causing birds to abandon their nests, along with experiencing health issues like plumage deterioration, locomotion problems, and reduced survivorship. Non-ionizing microwave radiation has also been linked to declining bee populations, which reduce a queen’s egg-laying capabilities. A 2012 Loyola College study concluded that out of 919 research studies conducted on birds, plants, bees, humans, and other animals, 593 subjects showed signs of being affected by RF-EMG radiation.
Another environmental concern comes from 5G satellites, which have shorter lifespans, and will require more frequent launches than we currently see. A new type of hydrocarbon engine is expected to power these suborbital rocket fleets, which would emit black carbon and other hazardous substances like chlorine into the atmosphere. According to one Californian study, these emission rates could potentially cause significant changes in global atmospheric circulation, along with ozone and temperature distributions.
3. Property Values
The widespread deployment of 5G will result in thousands of small cell towers emerging in our neighborhoods, with some even being installed in our front and backyards. Many homeowners are worried about ramifications like declining property values (in addition to health concerns). One study from the National Association of Realtors revealed having cellphone towers in communities directly impacts housing prices, with properties dropping 20-30 percent not being uncommon throughout areas where cell towers are installed.
Not only will 5G cause many more cell towers to emerge, but they’ll be in closer proximity to each other. Expert projections have telecommunication conglomerates like AT&T needing 400 small towers just to cover the uptown section of a city the size of Charlotte, North Carolina, while almost 28,000 might be needed to expand across a whole area of a city that size. Because the high-frequency waves for 5G don’t travel as far as current wireless frequencies, these cell towers will need to be roughly 100-500 yards apart. One way to accommodate this need is resort to “small cell” sites that use installments like streetlights and utility poles (as mentioned earlier).
Two unique features of SARS-CoV-2 are convincing a growing number of scientists that it was man-made, and not the result of natural evolution, according to the Daily Telegraph.
First, the virus binds more strongly to human ACE2 enzymes than any other species, including bats.
Second, SARS-CoV-2 has a "furin cleavage site" missing in its closes bat-coronavirus relative, RaTG-13, which makes it significantly more infectious - a finding we reported in late February.
According to Israeli geneticist, Dr. Ronen Shemesh, the Furin site is the most unusual finding.
"I believe that the most important issue about the differences between ALL coronavirus types is the insertion of a Furin protease cleavage site at the Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2," he said. "Such an insertion is very rare in evolution, the addition of such 4 Amino acids alone in the course of only 20 years is very unlikely."
Shamesh, who is working on a treatment for COVID-19, believes the novel coronavirus was most likely created in a lab, and did not evolve in nature.
"There are many reasons to believe that the COVID-19 generating SARS-CoV-2 was generated in a lab. Most probably by methods of genetic engineering," he said, adding "I believe that this is the only way an insertion like the FURIN protease cleavage site could have been introduced directly at the right place and become effective."
Dr Shemesh, who has a PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and over 21 years of experience in the field of drug discovery and development, said it is even “more unlikely” that this insertion happened in exactly the right place of the cleavage site of the spike protein - which is where it would need to occur to make the virus more infectious. -Daily Telegraph
"What makes it even more suspicious is that fact that this insertion not only occurred on the right place and in the right time, but also turned the cleavage site from an Serine protease cleavage site to a FURIN cleavage site," he added.
In January, a team of Indian scientists wrote in a now-retracted paper that the coronavirus may have been genetically engineered to incorporate parts of the HIV genome, writing "This uncanny similarity of novel inserts in the 2019- nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature," meaning - it was unlikely to have occurred naturally.
Then, in February, a team of researchers in Nankai University noted that COVID-19 has an 'HIV-like mutation' that allows it to quickly enter the human body by binding with a receptor called ACE2 on a cell membrane.
Other highly contagious viruses, including HIV and Ebola, target an enzyme called furin, which works as a protein activator in the human body. Many proteins are inactive or dormant when they are produced and have to be “cut” at specific points to activate their various functions.
When looking at the genome sequence of the new coronavirus, Professor Ruan Jishou and his team at Nankai University in Tianjin found a section of mutated genes that did not exist in Sars, but were similar to those found in HIV and Ebola. -SCMP
According to the Nankai University study, the furin binding method is "100 to 1,000 times as efficient' as SARS at entering cells.
"This protein cleaving protein is highly promiscuous, it’s found in many human tissues and cell types and is involved in many OTHER virus types activation and infection mechanisms (it is involved in HIV, Herpes, Ebola and Dengue virus mechanisms)," said Dr. Shemesh. "If I was trying to engineer a virus strain with a higher affinity and infective potential to humans, I would do exactly that: I would add a Furin Cleavage site directly at the original less effective and more cell specific cleavage site."
Meanwhile, Flinders University Professor Nikolai Petrovsky found either "a remarkable coincidence or a sign of human intervention," telling the Telegraph that COVID-19 is "exquisitely adapted to humans."
"We really don’t know where this virus came from - that’s the truth. The two possibilities is that it was a chance transmission of a virus...the other possibility is that it was an accidental release of the virus from a laboratory," he said, adding "One of the possibilities is that an animal host was infected by two coronaviruses at the same time and COVID-19. The same process can happen in a petri-dish."
"In other words COVID-19 could have been created from that recombination event in an animal host or it could have occurred in a cell-culture experiment. I’m certainly very much in favour of a scientific investigation. Its only objective should be to get to the bottom of how did this pandemic happen and how do we prevent a future pandemic."
Meanwhile, if you can stand 26 minutes of adrenaline-inducing fear porn soundtrack, Australia's Sky News has put together a segment obliterating the wet market theory, noting China's poor track record of biolab security, and tying together much of the emerging findings supporting the lab-origin theory.
